Newport Way Traffic Study


At the request of the Newport Way Sidewalk Committee, the City of Bellevue performed a one week traffic volume and speed study.  This page presents the results of the study

Summary

  • Dates: June 16-22, 2014
  • The Study was done at a 25 mph speed limit posting between the community Center and Tyee Middle School
  • Close to 50,000 vehicle trips were recorded.
  • Overall, nearly one quarter of the vehicle speeds were at least 23% above the posted speed limit.
  • 37% of weekday vehicle trips occurred during school start or release periods for Tyee, Newport High School, and Eastgate Elementary.  Of these, 41% were during start and release times for Tyee Middle School.


Volumes

  • Weekly Volume 49,613 cars
  • Week Day Volume 39,384 cars [79% of total]
  • Weekday during school start/release times:
    • Eastgate, Tyee, and Somerset 14,552 cars (37% of weekday traffic)
    • Tyee Only 6,033 cars (41% of all school time trips)


Speeds

  • Speed Limit: 25 MPH
  • Every statistic collected is above 25 MPH, without exception. This includes all days, all averages, all 50th or greater percentiles, all 10 mph pace brackets.
  • Several cars clocked at speeds between 50 and 80 MPH
